Since the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the “International Disease” classification on May 17, 1990, lgbti+ anti-phobia events have been held in many different countries around the world.

As HEVİ LGBTI+ Association, we are coming together with the “Meeting against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia in the special of Refugee LGBTI+s”, which will be held for the 6th  time this year.

Why in the special of Refugee LGBTI+s?

According to the Global Trends report released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in 2020, 79 million 500 people were displaced in the world in 2019 alone.

It is known by all of us that refugees are not a problem but a result within the scope of the mobility phenomenon in which the refugees are problematized with the definition of “refugee crisis” on a global scale.

On the one hand, contrary to what is defined, we say that the situation is a “migration policy crisis”, and on the other hand, we want to emphasize again that the point that should be perceived as a problem is the displacement of people by state and community violence.

An important part of this global wave of migration is LGBTI+s, who are often subjected to discrimination and LGBTI+ phobia in the countries where they live. Again, according to the statement made by UNHCR in 2020, Turkey is among the top 5 countries with the highest number of refugees in the world. There are more than 4 million refugees in Total in Turkey. A significant proportion of them is refugee LGBTI+s.

Refugee LGBTI+ individuals who are living and forced to live in Turkey are subjected to multiple discrimination; They often have to fight LGBTI+ phobia and racism on their own. As HEVİ LGBTI+, we have been working regularly with refugee LGBTI+s since 2015. As HEVİ, we will meet online with our refugee LGBTI+ friends on May 17, International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, Anti-Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) to remind that refugee LGBTI+ individuals are not alone and to combat rights violations and LGBTI+ phobia.

Together, we invite you to fight LGBTI+ phobia, racism and all discrimination.
